Amherst Downs NESCAC Rival Williams

Williams (8-1) 30 38 -- 68
Amherst (10-0) 38 41 -- 79

Amherst posted a 79-68 victory over archrival Williams to remain undefeated and tie the program's best start ever with 10 straight wins. With Thursday's 74-68 nailbiter over Wesleyan, the Jeffs are halfway toward defending their piece of the Little III title.

Four Lord Jeffs posted double figures as Amherst claimed a lead it would never relinquish just over three minutes into the game. A 3-pointer by Hugh Quattlebaum (Andover, MA) gave the Jeffs a 10-point advantage midway through the first, and Chris Ingraham (Tuscon, AZ) tallied Amherst's final eight points of the half for a 38-30 lead heading into the locker room.

Ephs Jim Frew (Worcester, MA) and two-time All-American Mike Nogelo (Sudbury, MA) teamed up to cut the Amherst advantage to 1 early in the second half. The Jeffs responded with a 14-2 run that gave Amherst its biggest lead of the night at 13. Quattlebaum scored eight straight Amherst points as he registered his third steal and was fouled on the Jeffs' first basket after a 5:40 drought on the floor. Solid free throw shooting closed out the match for the Jeffs, who hit 17-19 in the final seven minutes.

Eph Nogelo led the game with 26 points and 12 boards, while John Pavelski (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ) topped the Jeffs with 15 points, including 10 from the line. Rookie Brian Daoust (Dover, MA) dished out four assists in just 10 minutes.

Amherst improves to 10-0 after upsetting the 4th-ranked team in the nation, who falls to 8-1. Both teams resume NESCAC league play on Tuesday when Amherst hosts 6th-ranked Trinity and Middlebury travels to Williamstown for 7:30pm showdowns.
