AMHERST, MA Ð Amherst College improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the NESCAC with a three match conference sweep over Colby, Bates and Tufts Saturday at LeFrak Gymnasium. The Firedogs also topped Bowdoin 3-0 on Friday night and dropped just two games in four matches over the weekend.
Amherst ripped Colby 3-1 in the opener (15-0, 13-15, 15-5, 15-13) as junior middle hitter Erica Hewes (Woodside, CA) posted a team-high 11 kills to go along with seven digs. Sophomore middle hitter Erin Dittus (Brentwood, TN) added an even 10 kills and 10 digs, while junior setter Meredith DeMeules racked up a match-high 27 assists. Alyssa Henley and Reagan Carey finished with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, for Colby.
The Firedogs also torched Bates 3-1 (12-15, 15-11, 15-8, 15-4) as Hewes again led Amherst with a whopping 27 kills. Dittus posted another double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs, while DeMeules racked up a healthy 51 assists. Jessica Stewart led Bates with 12 kills and eight digs in defeat.
In the nightcap, Amherst made quick work of Tufts as Hewes and Dittus again led the way in a 3-0 Firedog sweep - combining for 13 kills and 15 digs. Game scores were 15-8, 15-9 and 15-2. First year-standouts Lauren Wong (San Francisco, CA) and Jessica Allen (Fayetteville, NY) posted five kills apiece for Amherst, while DeMeules tallied another 23 assists.
Amherst returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Keene State.
