MIDDLETOWN, CT - After tying host Wesleyan University, 3-3, in the first-round of the four-team Spurrier Tournament on Saturday, the Amherst College men's hockey team took on NESCAC rival Trinity College in consolation action on Sunday, bowing to the Bantams, 7-4.
The game started out as a slugfest with each team scoring a trio of goals in the first period. First-year forward Beau Kretzman (Edina, MN) connected twice in the opening stanza for the Jeffs, sandwiched around an unassisted power-play tally by sophomore teammate Mike Kreger (Glenview, IL).
Amherst again took the lead in the second period when junior forward Justin Pitrack (Wilmette, IL) found the back of the net off a pair of assists from Kreger and first-year defenseman Bill Jenkins (Edina, MN). The advantage was short lived, however, as Trinity scored the game's final four goals, including three unanswered in the third period - one of which came in the waning seconds after the Jeffs pulled junior goaltender Justin Jagher (Framingham, MA) in favor of an empty net.
The loss was Amherst's first of the season, dropping their record to 1-1-2 overall. They return to action Friday at 7 p.m. at ECAC foe Norwich University.
