WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - The Amherst College men's lacrosse team posted a 14-6 loss in its regular-season finale at NESCAC rival Williams College on Saturday, ending its 2001 slate with a six-game losing streak to fall to 5-7 overall and 2-7 in conference play. Meanwhile, Williams, which entered the game with its own six-game losing skid, posted its first home, NESCAC and Little III win of the season to finish at 3-11 (1-6 NESCAC).
Williams' junior attackman Scott Goldberg set the tone for the Ephs with a pair of goals in the game's first four minutes, as the hosts held a 4-0 lead at the end of the first period. Sophomore midfielder Peter Thomson then notched the first of his three goals just 19 seconds into the second period, as Williams raced to an 8-1 halftime lead. Phil Cameron scored Amherst's lone goal of the half off a nifty feed from Craig McBeth with 8:32 remaining in the second period.
The second half started out much the same with Goldberg, Graham Davidson and Scott Wilbur each finding the back of the net for the Ephs. Eric Edelson also scored unassisted in the third period for Amherst, but the Ephs led 12-2 heading into the fourth period.
The Jeffs surged in the final stanza, outscoring Williams 4-3 in the fourth behind a trio of scores by Rob Gibson, Mike Allison and Edelson to close out the game. Gene Nogi also scored for Amherst, but it was too little, too late as time ran out on the scoreboard and possibly the Jeffs' season.
Robert Adamo paced the Ephs offensively with a goal and four assists, while Davidson added three goals and three assists. Goldberg pitched in with three goals and an assist, while Williams' first-year goalkeeper Matt Rade stopped 16 of the 19 shots he faced before exiting the game in the final minutes. Meanwhile, senior goalkeeper Corey Simonson finished with 14 saves for Amherst.
With the loss, Amherst finds itself locked in seventh position alongside Bates College-which also lost on Saturday to Middlebury College, 21-10-for the final slot in the inaugural NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament. The Jeffs hold the head-to-head advantage over Bates with an 8-5 win over the Bobcats earlier this season. However, with a 2-6 conference mark, Bates has one less loss in NESCAC play than the Jeffs. Both teams will wait until Monday, when a tournament selection committee will determine their postseason fait.
