Amherst Field Hockey Knocks Off Bowdoin, 1-0

AMHERST, MA - Senior tri-captain Marcy Busch (Scarsdale, NY) knocked home a goal in the first period to give the Amherst College women's field hockey team a 1-0 victory over Bowdoin College on Saturday. The No. 10 ranked team in the country, Amherst improves its record to 6-1 overall (3-1 NESCAC), while Bowdoin, ranked No. 12 in the nation, drops to 6-2 (3-2 NESCAC).

After two good scoring chances from Bowdoin in the early-going, Amherst dominated the rest of first-half play, totaling 11 penalty corners. With 8:02 remaining in the half, Mairin Brady (Bethesda, MD) blasted a shot on net from 20 feet out which deflected off a Bowdoin defender and hit the goal post. A scramble in front of the net resulted in a feed from junior defender Carlyn Lamia (Chevy Chase, MD) to Busch for the game-winner.

The second half featured more good scoring chances by Amherst, including a shot from junior defender Molly O'Connor (Baltimore, MD) on which Bowdoin goalie Gillian McDonald (Hudson, Quebec) made a great save. However, McDonald (nine saves) was injured on the play and sophomore Kristin Pollock (Kenilworth, IL) completed the game.

Amherst goalie Beth Sensing (Hockessin, DE) made one save, while senior tri-captain Anne Close (Limekiln, PA) performed well on defense.

Amherst returns to action Monday at 5 p.m. against visiting non-league opponent M.I.T.
