Jeffs Down Colby, 3-1

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's soccer team fought through treacherous weather conditions and downed visiting NESCAC foe Colby College, 3-1, Saturday at Hitchcock Field. With the victory, the Jeffs improved to 6-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play while the White Mules dropped to 4-6 and 1-5.

Colby drew first blood 6:30 into the contest when senior forward Christine O'Donnell (Salem, MA) notched her team-leading fifth goal of the season. The Jeffs quickly countered when sophomore striker Tracy Montigny (East Granby, CT) took the ball out of a pile in front and booted home her fifth goal of the year. Amherst tallied moments later when sophomore midfielder Adrienne Showler (Ottawa, Ontario) grabbed a rebound and netted an easy tap-in goal, giving the hosts a 2-1 advantage at halftime.

Sophomore midfielder Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) tacked on a late insurance goal for the Jeffs, taking a nifty feed from classmate Lee-Jay Henry (Springfield, MA) and firing a shot into the back of the net to round the scoring out at 3-1. Senior goalkeeper Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) was stellar in net and finished with eight saves while Colby sophomore Elizabeth Riley (Saco, ME) recorded six.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. at NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan University.
