Jeffs Advance to NESCAC Championship Game with 2-1 Win at Bowdoin

FROM A BOWDOIN COLLEGE RELEASE

BRUNSWICK, ME - After edging fifth-seeded Tufts University in the NESCAC Tournament Quarterfinals last weekend, the fourth-seeded Amherst College men's soccer team extended its current winning streak to nine games on Saturday with a thrilling 2-1 upset victory over top-seeded host Bowdoin College in the conference semifinals. Jeff senior midfielder Chris Kane (Marblehead, MA) took a feed from junior forward Franklin Perry (Hartford, CT) and found the back of the net with just over two minutes remaining to propel the visitors into the NESCAC Championship game.

Bowdoin drew first blood 29:06 into the contest when first-year midfielder Andrew Russo (Weymouth, MA) threaded a nifty pass to sophomore forward Thomas Bresnehan (Sherborn, MA) who tickled the twine, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage. Amherst countered in the 37th minute when sophomore forward Joaquin Walker (Denver, CO) tallied his fifth goal of the year to even the score at 1-1 heading into halftime.

Kane notched the game-winner in the 88th minute to lift the Jeffs past the Polar Bears. Amherst first-year goalkeeper and NESCAC Player of the Week Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) was stellar in net once again, finishing with nine saves while Bowdoin junior netminder Travis Derr (Berlin, CT) countered with 13. With the victory, the Jeffs improve to 12-3-1 overall while the Polar Bears drop to 10-3-2.

Amherst returns to action Sunday at Noon in Brunswick, Maine in the NESCAC Championship game against second-seeded archrival Williams College, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Williams stunned third-seeded Middlebury College in the other semifinal matchup on Saturday, tying the game at 1-1 with three seconds remaining in regulation and going on to notch the game-winner in overtime.
