WALTHAM, MA - The Amherst College baseball team was upended at non-league foe Brandeis University, 6-5, Saturday afternoon. The host Judges rallied with four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to steal the victory. With the loss, the Jeffs drop to 10-11 overall, while Brandeis improves to 14-8.
Amherst jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, taking advantage of a walk, an error, a pair of hit batsmen and two singles, to go up 4-0. Brandeis countered in the third inning with an RBI-single by junior Andrew Kahn. The Jeffs answered in the seventh when first-year shortstop Josh Santry (Allendale, NJ) doubled and scored on an error.
Brandeis cut its deficit to just three runs in the eighth when senior Jim Freethey scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Lars Borssen. The hosts then put together their late inning comeback. After the leadoff hitter struck-out, first-year Jeff Krasner singled and pinch-hitter Joe Loynd followed with a two-strike opposite-field double off the left field wall. Jeff sophomore reliever Duncan Webb (Lynn, MA) then came into the game to face Freethey and was greeted with a two-run triple to right field. Two pitches later, Freethey came across to score the game-tying run on a passed ball. Kahn then cleared the bases with a triple off the left field wall, followed by a bloop single by sophomore Dan McIntosh that scored the game-winning run.
Sophomore hurler Paul Ramsdell (1-1) earned the victory for the Judges, while Webb (2-3) took the loss for Amherst. The Jeffs return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader at NESCAC foe Bates College.
