AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College baseball team took both games of a doubleheader against visiting NESCAC West Division foe Hamilton College Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field. Amherst ace Dave Krauser (Short Hills, NJ) tossed a complete-game in the opener, in which the Jeffs pounded out 17 hits and won, 11-3. Sophomore hurler Duncan Webb (Lynn, MA) followed up Krauser's performance, also going the distance, allowing just four hits as the Jeffs took the second game, 9-1.
In the opening game, the Continentals drew first blood in the top of the first when junior catcher Jack Halas (Chelsea, MA) smacked an RBI-single into left field that scored first-year third baseman Adam Lavallee (Goffstown, NH). The Jeffs quickly countered with a trio of runs in the bottom half of the frame. First-year outfielder David Powers (Andover, MA) - who went 3-for-3 in the first game - looped a single into right field that scored first-year shortstop Josh Santry (Allendale, NJ). Junior outfielder John Schneider (Grand Rapids, MI) then scored on an errant throw as Powers stole second. Junior catcher Joe Katuska (Southboro, MA) then ripped a rocket into right field to send Powers strolling across home plate, giving the hosts a 3-1 advantage. Hamilton evened the score at 3-3 in the third inning when junior outfielder Rick Ziegler (Westchester, PA) knocked a pair of runners in with a two-out single down the left field line. Amherst answered right back in the bottom of third with six runs to move ahead, 9-3. Junior outfielder Jarrett Solomon (Simsbury, CT) knocked an RBI-double into left field in the sixth inning to round the scoring out at 11-3. With the victory, Krauser improved to 4-1, while Continental pitcher Matt Marsallo (Syracuse, NY) took the loss and fell to 2-3.
The Jeffs bombarded the visitors with 12 hits in the second contest. Powers paced the hosts with a 3-for-4 performance, scoring a run and notching a pair of RBI's. Hamilton committed seven errors that helped lead Amherst to victory. Webb evened his record to 3-3, while sophomore Matt Keough (Jamesville, NY) fell to 0-3 for the visitors.
With the pair of victories, Amherst jumps above the .500 mark, at 14-13 overall and 5-4 in conference play, while Hamilton drops to 7-16 and 1-7. The Jeffs return to action Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Trinity College.
