Tufts Spoils Amherst Home Opener, 1-0

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College field hockey team played a gritty game against visiting Tufts University on Saturday, but fell 1-0 after a late goal gave Tufts the win. The game remained scoreless through the first half of play, due in large part to three first-half saves from first-year Amherst goalkeeper Anne McMullin (St. Louis, MO). McMullin tallied six saves on the day.

After the break, both teams upped the intensity. Amherst picked up on offense, notching four shots on goal – three from senior forward Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA), and one from senior forward Jenna Obelsky (Stoughton, MA). However, neither Obelsky nor Ouimet could find the back of the net. With 10:55 left in the second half, Jumbo Jennie Sachs converted on a pass from Jeanne Grabowski. The lone tally was all Tufts would need to take the win back to Medford.

The loss moved the Jeffs to 1-1 on the season. They will host local rival Smith College on Thursday. The Jumbos improved to 1-1 with the win following a loss to Bentley College earlier in the week week.
