AMHERST, MA - After suffering a pair of heartbreaking shutout losses to Tufts University and Eastern Connecticut State University the Amherst College women's soccer team rebounded to blank visiting NESCAC foe Bates College, 1-0, Saturday at Hitchcock Field. Sophomore striker Lee-Jay Henry (Springfield, MA) notched the game-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining in the contest.
The Bobcats had the game's first legitimate scoring opportunity when first-year forward Jenna Benson (Watertown, MA) fired a shot that ricocheted off an Amherst defender before senior co-captain goaltender Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) sprawled out to make a spectacular save. The Jeffs also posed a viable scoring threat to open the second half when sophomore striker Tracy Montigny (East Granby, CT) launched a shot just over the crossbar.
Amherst's next best chance came in the 79th minute when Henry blasted a shot off the iron from 18 yards out. Shortly thereafter, Henry tickled the twine when she took a nifty feed from Montigny and fired a rocket into the back of the net.
Diamond was stellar in net, finishing with six saves after returning from a shoulder injury suffered in practice earlier in the week. Bobcat senior goaltender Kim Martell (Needham, MA) was equally impressive and recorded five saves. With the victory the Jeffs improve to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play while Bates drops to 2-2 and 1-1.
Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at non-league foe Springfield College.
