Jeffs Battle Babson to 3-3 Overtime Tie

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College men's hockey team battled visiting ECAC East foe Babson College to a 3-3 overtime tie on Saturday. Amherst junior co-captain Beau Kretzman (Edina, MN) netted two power-play goals, the second coming with only 22 seconds remaining in regulation, and sophomore A.J. Greco (Williamsville, NY) added his first goal of the season.

Amherst took a 1-0 lead 9:27 into the first period as Greco led a three-on-one shorthanded break and beat the Babson goaltender with a hard shot. Babson sophomore Nathan Cook (Campbellton, New Brunswick) scored consecutive goals, the first assisted by senior Derek Nisula (Gardner, MA) and first-year Ryan Farrell (East Islip, NY) and the second on a power play, assisted by senior Eric Tkacz (Enfield, CT). The Beavers pushed their lead to 3-1 as sophomore forward Jamas LaFreniere (Southborough, MA) scored just 40 seconds into the second period off assists from Farrell and first-year Kyle Sibley (Hanson, MA). However, the Jeffs fought back in the third period, capitalizing on two power-play opportunities. Amherst used nifty passing from Greco and sophomore forward Steve Nelson (Wayzata, MN) to find Kretzman for his second score of the year and, after pulling first-year goalkeeper Dan Smith (Rochester, MN) with 24 seconds remaining the third period, Kretzman used a rebounded shot from first-year defender Brandon Zangel (Highlands Ranch, CO) to punch home the game-tying goal.

Neither team was able to break through in the extra session as Smith collected three of his 25 saves in overtime. Babson sophomore goalie Craig Weiner (Thornwood, NY) tallied 32 saves in the tie as both the Jeffs and the Beavers move to 1-0-1 (1-0-1 ECAC East).

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. against visiting non-conference opponent Wentworth College.
