Jeffs Win NESCAC Opener 2-1 at Tufts

MEDFORD, MA – The Amherst College field hockey team defeated Tufts University in its NESCAC opener to improve to 2-0 (1-0 NESCAC) on the season. Junior goalkeeper K.C. Cosentino (Greenwich, CT) had 11 saves and earned her second career shutout for the Jeffs, while senior forward Lauren Sozio (Dedham, MA) put home the game-winner on a pass from first-year Rachel Carr-Harris (Pleasantville, NY).

Cosentino was attacked early and often as the Jumbos tallied 11 shots in the first half, including a threatening breakaway. Tufts kept up the pressure with 13 shots after the break but Cosentino weathered the storm for her first shutout of the season.

The Jeffs mustered only three shots in the win. Sozio's game-winner came with 1:58 remaining in the first half courtesy of Carr-Harris' first career assist.

Senior Julie Jackson tended the net for Tufts and had two saves in defeat.

Amherst returns to action Thursday at 7 p.m at Smith College.
