Jeffs Drop NESCAC Opener at Colby, 60-44

WATERVILLE, ME - Sarah Kelly (Portsmouth/Portsmouth, N.H.) had 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting and added eight rebounds to lead the Colby College women's basketball team to a 60-44 victory over Amherst College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Friday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium. The Mules improved to 7-7 overall and stand at 1-0 in the conference. Amherst falls to 8-5 overall and 0-1 in the league. 

Wendy Bonner (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) added nine points and eight rebounds for Colby, which led 22-17 at halftime. Laura Williamson (Kingswood-Oxford/Manchester, Conn.) had eight points for the winners. 

Colby used a full-court press for much of the game and forced 26 Amherst turnovers. The Mules also held the Lord Jeffs to just 27 percent shooting from the field. 

Caitlin Farrell (Campolindo/Lafayette, Calif.) had 11 points, including 7-for-7 from the foul line for Amherst. Julie Smith (Radnor/Villanova, Pa.) added 10 points and six rebounds for the Lord Jeffs. 

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. at NESCAC rival Bowdoin College.
