11th-Ranked Jeffs Battle Bates to 0-0 Double-Overtime Tie

AMHERST, MA - The 11th-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team played visiting NESCAC foe Bates College to a 0-0 double-overtime tie on Sunday, registering its third tie of the season. The Jeffs move to 3-1-3 overall and 2-0-2 in conference play, while the Bobcats are 4-1-1 and 1-2-1.

The visiting Bobcats attacked early as sophomore Kim Alexander (Cumberland, ME) had a sliding shot stuffed by Amherst sophomore keeper Piper Crowell (San Rafael, CA) just 53 seconds into play. The Jeff offense turned the tide near the five-minute mark as senior Tracy Montigny (East Granby, CT) had a pair of attempts denied by the Bobcat defense. Bates had another near score just before the half, but Crowell nabbed the header by first-year Allison Emery (Richmond, VT) to preserve the tie.

Bates came out firing again in the second half and found the net just 43 seconds after the kickoff. However, the goal was nullified by an offsides call on senior Katie Carroll (Pennington, NJ). The two squads traded possession and shots through the remainder of the half, but both Crowell and Bates first-year goalie Emily Howieson (Holliston, MA) came up with save after save to keep the game scoreless.

The first overtime period saw little action as Bates mustered only two shots, the first saved by Crowell and the second sailed over the crossbar, while Amherst had only one attempt, a free kick by senior tri-captain Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) that missed high as well. Bates first-year Jessica Wagner (Sudbury, MA) nearly won the game in the second extra session, sending a hard shot from the top of the box, but Crowell made a leaping save. Amherst rookie Heather Nowak (New Haven, CT) took a corner kick in the waning minutes of the period, but sophomore midfielder Sarah Shea's (W. Hartford, CT) header attempt missed wide right.

Crowell finished with 10 saves, earning her first shutout of the year, while Howieson was credited with six stops.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at noon at NESCAC opponent Middlebury Colllege.
