Jeffs Play to 6-6 Tie at Babson

BABSON PARK, MA - The Amherst College men's hockey team fell victim to a game-tying goal by Babson College junior Johnny Kim (Brookville, Md.) with 1:50 left in regulation as the Beavers and the visiting Jeffs finished in a 6-6 deadlock in ECAC East/NESCAC men's ice hockey action on Saturday afternoon. With the tie, both teams moved to 1-0-1 on the season.

After Amherst took a 2-0 advantage in the first period on goals by seniors Beau Kretzman (Edina, Minn.) and Scott Aldrich (Wilmington, Mass.), Babson erupted for four scores in the second, including the first career goals for first-years Mike Venit (Ridley Park, Pa.) and Ryan Ferguson (Sydney, N.J.), to take a 4-3 lead into the second intermission. Amherst's Andrew Schremp (Denver, Colo.) and Jon Hill (Averill Park, N.Y.) then tallied the first two goals of the third before Babson first-year Tom Marengi (Ashland, Mass.) answered with the first of his collegiate career with 7:20 remaining. With the score tied 5-5, Amherst first-year Kyle Schoppel (Cambridge, Ontario) once again put Amherst in front with his second goal in as many nights at 13:43. Things stayed that way until the final two minutes, when Kim netted an unassisted goal on the power play at 18:10, knotting the contest at 6-6.

Sophomore goalie Josh Fillman (Charlestown, Mass.) turned away 33 shots in the game for Amherst, while Babson sophomore John Sterbling (Farmington Hills, Mich.) finished with 22 saves for the Beavers.
