BOWDOIN, ME – The Amherst men's soccer team lost their first game of the season 1-0 at NESCAC rival Bowdoin College this afternoon, to move to 7-1 (NESCAC, 3-1). Bowdoin improves to 5-1 (NESCAC, 3-1) with the victory.
Amherst dominated the pitch in today's conference match-up, with solid play from sophomore keeper Jeffrey Grover (Framingham, MA) as well as senior co-captain Mike Wohl (Northampton, MA), but was just unable to put the ball in the net. In the midfield, counterparts Ian Lovett (Newton, MA) and John Kneeland (Holden, MA) played well to control the center of the pitch.
Bowdoin took the 1-0 lead as sophomore forward Nick Figueiredo (Wilmington, MA) found the nylon on a double assist from forwards Hugh Fleming (Lansdale, PA) and Wolf Grueber (Hamburg, Germany). Late in the game, it looked as if Amherst may force overtime as Wohl took the ball down the left side, crossing it to fellow senior co-captain Rob Madden (Woodbridge, CT), who drilled a shot just high of the open net. The Polar Bears hung on, however, and cemented the victory.
Amherst returns to the field Wednesday when NESCAC rival Connecticut College comes to Hitchcock Field. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
