Amherst Men's Ice Hockey Edged by Wesleyan 1-0

MIDDLETOWN, CT -  Behind 34 saves by junior goaltender Tim Archibald, Wesleyan posted its first-ever shutout vs. Amherst in 81 all-time meetings between the teams.  Wesleyan had held Amherst to a lone goal on three previous occasions, all in Amherst, Mass., but had never before held the Lord Jeffs to less than two goals in Middletown.  This was the 37th time the teams have done battle at Wesleyan.

Wesleyan also snapped an eight-game losing skid to Amherst, dating back to January 10, 2004 when Wesleyan defeated Amherst on the road, 3-1. There had been three previous shutouts in the series, all by Amherst, including the last two times the teams faced each other.  Amherst won at home, 4-0, last year, and won in Middletown, 2-0, in the first round of the NESCAC tournament during the 2006-07 season.

Making just the fifth start of his career, Archibald posted nine saves in both the first and third periods while registering 16 stops during a busy middle stanza.  His Amherst counterpart, sophomore Cole Anderson (Sylvan Lake, Alberta), came up with 24 saves.  The game's only goal came just 39 seconds into the third period as Wesleyan assistant captain Dallas Bossort picked up the puck on the left side of the Wesleyan defensive end and made an individual rush to the Amherst zone.  Getting by a defender, he switch the puck from his backhand to his forehand and snapped off a wrist shot from the left face off circle into the upper right corner of the net.

Amherst had a few good scoring opportunities during the third period but could not cash in either due to good stops by Archibald or shots missing the mark.  Amherst was unable to mount much in the way of a final thrust as a penalty, the ninth minor penalty whistled against the Lord Jeffs in the contest, left them short-handed for the final 1:07.  Still Amherst pulled its goalie but failed to get a shot on net in the final 67 seconds.

Both teams finished the opening weekend of play with a 1-1 record.
