Jeffs Close Out Weekend with 2-0 Setback to Trinity

AMHERST, MA - The 10th-ranked Amherst College men's hockey team closed out the opening weekend of the 2009-10 season with a 2-0 setback this afternoon against NESCAC rival Trinity College. The game sat deadlocked in a scoreless tie until the middle of the third period, before the Bantams scored the game-winner.

The Lord Jeffs nearly took a 1-0 lead in the final minutes of the first period when junior Joe Brock  (Cumming, GA) hit the post while Amherst was on the power play.

Amherst was close to scoring once again five minutes into the second period when Jake Hannon (Williamsville, NY) took a shot that was deflected into the outside of the left post. The near score once again came while Amherst was on the power play.

Amherst goaltender Cole Anderson (Sylvan Lake, Alberta) made a good glove save 7:54 into the second period that kept the Bantams off the board, and the game tied 0-0.

10:40 in the third period, Amherst defender Gavin Carson's (Montreal, Quebec) pass out of his own defensive end was intercepted by Trinity's Steve Rogers. Rogers took the loose puck and beat Anderson over his left shoulder for the game's opening score and eventual game-winner.

Amherst head coach Jack Arena pulled Anderson  at 18:55 of the third for an extra skater, but Ben Shellington was able to score on the empty net with just 32 seconds remaining in the third to give the Bantams a 2-0 win.

In the loss, Anderson made 24 saves and gave up just the one goal, while Wesley Vesprini made 34 saves in the Trinity net for the shutout win.
