HOBOKEN, NJ – The Amherst College women's lacrosse team fell to 2-2 on the season with a 16-6 loss at Stevens Institute of Technology. The Lord Jeffs trailed by only one goal at halftime but were outscored 9-0 in the second half. Amherst returns to action Saturday, Mar. 21 to host Bowdoin College in a NESCAC matchup.
Two minutes after Stevens (5-0) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Karen Federico, Amherst tied things up when senior quad-captain Mary Noonan (West Roxbury, MA) scored on a free position shot. Fellow senior quad-captain Amy Craig (Denver, CO) gave the Jeffs a 2-1 lead on an unassisted goal, but Christine smith made it 2-2 only 30 seconds later.
Amherst would score four of the game's next six goals to take a 6-4 lead, with Craig adding another two scores, Noonan adding one, and sophomore Kelley Trapp (Monterey, CA) netting her sixth of the season. The Jeffs' sixth and final goal came with 7:26 remaining in the first half, as Stevens went on to score the next 12 goals of the game to cruise to a 16-6 victory.
The teams were nearly even on the stat sheet, with Stevens holding an edge in shots (34-27), turnovers (16-15) and ground balls (22-14). First-year goalkeeper Lamia Harik (Rye Brook, NY) made 14 saves in 55 minutes and 44 seconds between the pipes, while Grace Sack stopped 15 shots to pick up the win for the Ducks. The difference-maker was Stevens' 19-4 advantage in draw controls, including a 12-1 edge in the first half.
Craig leads Amherst with 15 goals on the season, while Noonan and Trapp are tied for second with six apiece.
