HARTFORD, Conn. - The seventh-ranked Amherst men's hockey team scored a pair of goals less than three minutes apart in the second period en route to a 3-0 shutout win over NESCAC rival Trinity.

The first-place Lord Jeffs, now 6-4-2 against the Bantams over their last 12, improved to 14-3-1 (11-1-0 NESCAC) after sweeping their season series with Trinity. The Bantams fell to 7-8-2 (4-6-2 NESCAC) with the loss.

Hoping to get Amherst off to a fast start, sophomore Erik Hansen (Deephaven, Minn.) wasted no time putting the visitors on the board, tallying his fourth goal of the year 3:31 into the opening frame on a rebound off a shot from classmate Brian Safstrom '14 (Woodinville, Wash.).

Holding a 14-10 shot advantage after the first, the Jeffs looked to carry their momentum into the middle period, with Hansen once again factoring into the scoring, assisting on junior Nick Brunette's (Chaska, Minn.) tally 5:28 into the stanza.

Just 2:28 later, sophomore forward Ryan Edwards (Rochester, N.Y.) extended the Amherst lead with his second goal of the season, staking the Jeffs to a 3-0 margin.

Closing the game strong, Amherst held a 10-7 edge in shots-on-goal in the final 20 minutes en route to its sixth win over its last seven games.

Senior goaltender Jonathan La Rose (Boyle, Alberta) posted his second consecutive shutout, making 28 saves to improve to 10-1-1 on the year. Trinity's Benjamin Coulthard '14 made 34 stops in the loss, falling to 5-5-2 on the season.

Amherst finished with a 37-28 shot advantage, going 0-for-1 on the power play, while holding the Bantams scoreless during a pair of man-up opportunities.

The Lord Jeffs return to action on Friday, February 3 against Bowdoin.
