Jeffs Go 1-1 on Day Two of NESCAC Championship

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Amherst College men's squash team posted a 1-1 record on day two of the 2012 NESCAC Championship, suffering an 8-1 loss to Middlebury in the quarterfinals before defeating Connecticut College by a score of 6-3 in the consolation bracket.

The Lord Jeffs—seeded sixth in the tournament and ranked 20th in the nation—will close out their weekend by taking on ninth-seeded Wesleyan Sunday at 9 a.m. in the fifth-place match at Trinity College's Kellner Squash Center.

Amherst (10-7) began its day by falling to third-seeded and 12th-ranked Middlebury in the quarterfinal round, marking the second time the Panthers have defeated the Jeffs this season. The match was incredibly close and could have gone either way, as Middlebury won four of the nine matches in 3-2 fashion.

Amherst's lone point against Middlebury came at number eight, where first-year Alex Southmayd continued his impressive rookie season with a 3-0 win over Reed Palmer (11-5, 11-5, 11-5). Todd Lavine '12 and Rodrigo Miranda '13 each won their first two games, but their Middlebury counterparts battled back for a pair of big points. Also suffering 3-2 losses for the Jeffs were Scott DeSantis '15 in the top spot and Matt Arnold '12 in the nine hole.

The Lord Jeffs rallied for a 6-3 win over the Camels in the afternoon session. Steve Severson '12, David Kerr '14 and Charles Loesch-Quintin '13 gave Amherst three points in the second, third and fourth matches, with each player earning a hard-fought 3-0 win. Southmayd also win his match in three close games at number eight, moving him to 3-0 on the weekend.

Max Kardon '15 dropped his first game to Brian Mullen in the sixth match, but the Lord Jeff rookie battled back to win the next three by scores of 11-6, 11-7 and 11-7. Arnold also came from behind at number nine, dropping his first game before winning the next three (11-9, 11-8, 12-10).
