Giddins Scores 20 as Amherst Defeats Adrian, 67-43

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – In its return to the court for the first time in over two weeks, the No. 3/2 Amherst College women's basketball team cruised to a 67-43 win over Adrian College Monday afternoon in the 22nd Annual Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Purple & White were fueled by a 20-point performance from Marley Giddins '16 as she went 9-of-13 from the floor and grabbed five rebounds.
  • Amherst shot 36.9% (24-65) as a team and held a commanding lead in assists, 15-3, and points in the paint, 28-10.
  • Joining Giddins in double-figures was Ali Doswell '17 with 15, as Jackie Nagle '18 grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and Meredith Doswell '17 pulled in 10 boards. Cheyenne Pritchard '16 scored eight points, registered five rebounds and dished out a game-high five assists.
  • Adrian was held to just 20.7% (12-58) shooting and connected on just one three-pointer (1-8).
  • The Bulldogs were led by Antoinea McElroy who dropped 19 points as she went 12-of-14 from the charity stripe. She also pulled in 10 rebounds to record the double-double. McElroy was the only Adrian player in double-figures as Ashley Morris and Amber McCullough scored eight and seven, respectively.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • Adrian scored first with a lay-up from Amber McCullough at the 8:09 mark, and held a lead for the majority of the first quarter.
  • With 1:59 to play in the opening stanza, Ali Doswell hit a jumper from downtown to give the Purple & White their first lead of the contest as they went ahead, 8-6, and never looked back.
  • Doswell hit five consecutive three-pointers to single-handedly give Amherst a double-digit lead as it pulled away, 20-10 with just under seven minutes to play before halftime.
  • Adrian got within single-digits twice, but a pair of free throws by Meredith Doswell sparked an 11-0 Amherst run in just 1:42 of action.
  • A trey by Jaimie Renner '17 seconds later put the Purple & White ahead at the break, 37-16.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • The third quarter went back-and-forth often as the Bulldogs were unable to get within 20.
  • Three straight baskets by Giddins early in the half provided a 6-0 Amherst run as the Purple & White pulled ahead by 27, 47-20.
  • The final 10 minutes of action were a similar story as both teams exchanged baskets for much of the quarter.
  • However, after another 6-0 Amherst run, capped off by a lay-up from Giddins, the Purple & White took a 29-point lead before eventually claiming the 67-43 win.

UP NEXT

  • Amherst returns to the court tomorrow, Dec. 29 and will play Salisbury at 3 p.m. for day-two action at the Land of Magic Classic.
  • Adrian is back in action tomorrow as well and is scheduled to play Marywood at 5 p.m.
