Box Score CHICOPEE, Mass. – The 10th-ranked Amherst College men's soccer team found the back of the net three times in the first half, and senior goalkeeper Thomas Bull earned his fifth consecutive shutout to start the season as the Purple & White posted a 4-0 victory over Elms College in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Leary Field.
With the win, Amherst remains unbeaten and moves to 5-0-0 on the season, while Elms moves to 2-4-0 overall.
Amherst got on the front foot early in the contest, as Nico Pascual-Leone '16 and Christopher Martin '17 each had good looks at goal in the opening 10 minutes of play. Following a corner service into the box from Jackson Lehnhart '17 at the 16:38 mark, the ball eventually fell to the foot of Pascual-Leone who tucked it inside the left post to give the Purple & White a 1-0 lead. Less than 10 minutes later, Amherst doubled its advantage to 2-0 when Lehnhart sent another menacing corner delivery into the box that was misplayed by an Elms defender and resulted in a Blazers' own goal.
The cushion was extended to 3-0 just ahead of intermission as Aziz Khan '18 notched his first goal of the season following a pass from Cameron Bean '17 at the 44:59 mark.
Elms fired two shots on target in the first 45 minutes of action as Colby Macdonald and James Kukharchuk each tested the Amherst keeper, but Bull was equal to the task, making two stops to keep Elms off the board.
Early in the second stanza, Macdonald sent a corner kick into the box and Connor O'Grady headed a shot towards net, but Bull was able to make another save, preserving the shutout.
In the 55th minute, Martin found nylon for the sixth time this season, chipping the keeper for the Purple & White's fourth marker of the match. Greg Singer '16 provided the assist on the strike.
Amherst's defensive line of Bean, Lehnhart, Sean Fitzgerald '19 and Justin Aoyama '17 were superb in the winning effort, keeping their fifth clean sheet of the season, and allowing just five shots on goal.
Martin and Khan finished with five shots on goal each as the visitors held a 19-10 advantage in shots, and a 15-5 differential in shots on goal. The Purple & White also held a commanding, 9-2 lead in corner kicks. Bull finished with five saves in the triumph.
Kukharchuk finished with a pair of shots on goal to lead the Elms offensive effort, while Nicholson Pennant made six of his 11 saves in the first half in the losing effort.
Amherst returns to NESCAC action Saturday, September 26 when it travels to Little III rival Williams College for a 1 p.m. match in Williamstown, Mass. The Purple & White bested the Ephs last season, 4-1 at Hitchcock Field in its 2014 home opener.
