No. 3/2 Amherst Roars Past Bowdoin, 78-48

AMHERST, Mass. – Ali Doswell '17 connected on four three-pointers to lead four players in double figures as the No. 3/2 Amherst College women's basketball team downed Bowdoin College, 78-48 in Friday evening's NESCAC contest at LeFrak Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Amherst relied on stellar shooting from the field (51%) and three-point range (40.9%), and hit on 17-of-22 (77.3%) from the free throw line to help seal the win.
  • Ali Doswell led all players with 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor in addition to pulling down eight rebounds. Marley Giddins '16 was a force on both the glass, notching a game-high 10 rebounds, and on offense as she finished with 17 points.
  • Hannah Hackley '18 and Cheyenne Pritchard '16 totaled 11 points each, while Hackley finished with eight boards. Jaimie Renner '17 dished out a game-best eight assists, while Meredith Doswell '17 added nine points and blocked three shots in the winning effort.
  • Bowdoin, which was held to just 29.3% shooting, and 11.1% efficiency from long distance, was led by Marle Curle who scored 14 points. Shannon Brady, Lydia Caputi, and Rachel Norton scored six points each, while Kate Kerrigan hauled in a team-best seven rebounds and added four steals.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • After Caputi made a bucket at the 9:44 mark of the first quarter to give the Polar Bears an early 2-0 lead, Amherst surged ahead with 10 straight points as Ali Doswell canned a pair of treys, while Giddins powered in a pair of layups to give the Purple & White a 10-2 advantage.
  • After a bucket by Brady pulled Bowdoin to within six with 6:41 to play in the stanza, Amherst continued to drive ahead using a 14-5 run to close out the quarter with a 24-9 cushion.
  • A tightly contested second frame saw the Purple & White edge the Polar Bears, 22-19, and a pair of clutch Pritchard three-pointers helped the hosts stake a 46-28 lead at intermission.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • In the third quarter, Amherst used balanced scoring to run its lead to 70-43 after three periods.
  • Meredith Doswell and Hackley netted six points apiece, while Pritchard hit another trey and scored five in the frame. Curle was stellar for Bowdoin in the stanza, netting eight of her team's 15 points in the third quarter.
  • In the fourth, the Purple & White scored eight of 13 total points to pull away to the 78-48 victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Amherst has now extended its home winning streak to a sensational 117 games with its 30-point win over the Polar Bears.
  • Friday's win for Amherst is the first in the last three games between the teams as Bowdoin won last season's regular season matchup (60-51 on Jan. 31), and last year's NESCAC Championship semifinal contest (74-66 on Feb. 28).
