Strong Third Quarter Sparks No. 4 Amherst Past No. 6 Bates, 14-9

AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College's Quinn Moroney '16 scored a pair of goals and dished out seven assists and the Purple & White scored five unanswered goals in the third quarter, to help lift fourth-ranked Amherst to a 14-9 victory over No. 6 Bates College in Saturday afternoon's NESCAC game at Pratt Field.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • In a back-and-forth first quarter, Moroney got Amherst an early 1-0 lead when he fired in an unassisted marker at the 10:46 mark.
  • Bates answered with back-to-back strikes from Charlie Fay, as Max Breschi and Matt Proto provided the assists on the goals to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead with 6:07 to play in the opening stanza.
  • Kane Haffey '16 scored on a dish from Moroney at the 4:43 mark, and with just 12 seconds remaining in the period, Brett Inglesby '18 scored to give the Purple & White a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes of action.
  • In the second quarter, Amherst extended its lead to 5-2 as Dylan Park '16 and Chris Albanese '17 scored following helpers from Moroney and Connor Sheehan '18. Albanese's strike also came on the extra-man opportunity.
  • Bates rallied scoring five goals in the 9:07 as Clarke Jones delivered an unassisted goal, while Jack Allard and Breschi each score on the man-advantage. Jake Walsh and Allard notched the assists on the goals.
  • A goal by Amherst's Charlie Gill at the 4:23 mark broke a 5-5 tie, but another goal from Beschi and a score from Fay with 24 seconds on the clock allowed Bates to take a 7-6 lead at intermission. Fay and Kyle Weber added assists on the visitor's final two markers.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • Trailing by a goal after 30 minutes, the Purple & White responded with three quick goals as Inglesby, Evan Wolf '19 and Haffey each found the back of the net to help Amherst stake a 9-7 lead 2:54 into the third frame.
  • Moroney , who provided the helpers on Wolf's and Haffey's tallies, and then found Jordan Sanford '18 who scorched the back of the net with 9:03 to play in the quarter to make it 10-7.
  • Moroney capped an all Amherst third frame with his second goal of the contest at the 7:05 mark as the Purple & White held an 11-7 advantage after 45 minutes.
  • Early in the fourth period, Bates struck through an unassisted goal by Allard at the 9:08 mark, before Haffey raced down the other end laced a shot into the nylon at the 8:55 mark to keep the lead at four goals (12-8).
  • Another Allard score that was aided by Andrew Melvin pulled the visitors to within three with 7:35 on the clock, but another Haffey goal, followed by a man-up strike from Gill helped Amherst seal the 14-9 victory. Dylan Park and Moroney distributed the assists on the respective goals.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Moroney, Andrew Ford '19 and Austin Park '19 led Amherst with seven ground balls each, while Ryan Cassidy '16 led the Purple & White with four caused turnovers. Rob Butko '16 and Ford added two caused turnovers each, while Haffey fired eight shots on target to highlight his four-goal effort.
  • Cody Tranbarger '17 made 14 saves between the pipes to seal the win, while Austin Park won 13-of-25 faceoffs.
  • Sam Francis led Bates with seven ground ball pickups, while Allard and Proto added four each. Allard also finished with eight shots on frame.
  • Joe Faria made 15 saves in goal for the Bobcats, including six in the first 15 minutes of play.
