No. 4 Amherst Surges Past Springfield, 15-7

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Trailing, 4-1 with 4:05 to play in the first quarter, Amherst College exploded for 12 unanswered goals as the fourth-ranked Purple & White pulled away to a 15-7 victory over Springfield College in Tuesday evening's non-conference men's lacrosse game at Stagg Field in Springfield, Mass.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • Springfield got off to a fast start as Kevin Dean scored at the 11:19 mark, while Dylan Sheehan followed less than a minute later to give the Pride a 2-0 lead.
  • A goal by Amherst's Kane Haffey '16 assisted by Quinn Moroney '16 cut the Purple & White's deficit in half, before Dylan Sheehan and Tim Cozens responded with back-to-back markers to give the hosts a 4-1 advantage with 5:02 to play in the opening 15 minutes.
  • Amherst then struck through Connor Sheehan '18 who capitalized on a feed from Haffey and netted a man-up goal to spark a 12-0 run.
  • Connor Sheehan added another goal in the first quarter, while Chris Albanese '17 scored with 55 seconds left to close out the period. Moroney aided both scores.
  • The Purple & White exerted their pressure in the second quarter notching six unanswered goals to help the visitors stake a 10-4 cushion at intermission.
  • Back-to-back goals on the extra-man opportunity by Dylan Park '16 and Connor Sheehan got the scoring started in the second frame, with Haffey providing an assist on Park's marker.
  • At the 10:16 mark, Albanese found Charlie Gill '16, before scoring a goal of his own on a feed from Ian Kadish '18 at the 4:26 mark to make it 8-4.
  • Twenty-six seconds later Haffey struck following a pass from Moroney, and then scored again with less than two minutes to play in the half to make it 10-4.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • The rally continued into the third quarter as Haffey scored his third consecutive and fourth goal overall at the 9:17 mark, before Matt Killian '17 scorched the nylon following a dish from Moroney at the 5:00 mark.
  • Moments later, Moroney added a tally with an assist from senior Sam Lawlor to give Amherst a commanding 13-4 advantage with 4:11 to play in the stanza.
  • Just before time expired in the third quarter, Tony LaGuerre notched a goal for Springfield with one tick on the clock to set the score at 13-5 after three quarters of play. Dylan Sheehan provided the helper on the play.
  • In the fourth quarter, both sides scored twice as Gill and Moroney found the back of the net for the Purple & White, while Dom Abate scored twice for the Pride to set the final score at 15-7.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Haffey finished with four goals and two assists, Connor Sheehan netted three goals, and Moroney logged two goals and six assists to lead Amherst offensively.
  • Austin Park '19 picked up five ground balls to lead the Purple & White, while Cody Tranbarger '17 played 57:39 in goal and made 17 saves, including five in the first, second and fourth periods.
  • Springfield was led by Tyler Heckmann who picked up a game-best eight groundballs and was 16-for-23 in faceoffs. Chris Santaniello and Jake Reynolds split the time in net with 30 minutes each, making four and 10 saves respectively.
