Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College used a seven-goal effort from Chris Albanese '17 and the eighth-ranked Purple & White scored 10 goals in the third stanza to pull away to a convincing, 22-11 victory over Trinity College in Wednesday evening's NESCAC contest at Pratt Field.
With the win, Amherst completes its 2016 regular season with an overall record of 12-3 and advances to its 14th NESCAC Championship tournament which begins Saturday, April 30 with the quarterfinal round. Trinity concludes its 2016 season with an overall record of 5-10, 2-8 in NESCAC action.
FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS
- In a back-and-forth first quarter, both teams combined for eight goals, scoring four apiece.
- Quinn Moroney '16, Evan Wolf '19, Dylan Park '16, and Andrew Ford '19 each scored for Amherst, while Guz Ackley, Seth Bird, Ben Knaus, and Jack Sharrio found the back of the net for Trinity.
- Wolf provided two assists, and Ian Kadish '18 added a helper for Amherst, while Jack Stallman and Stefan Pappas each tallied an assist for the Bantams.
- Trinity, which also scored the last goal of the first frame, erupted for three straight goals to start the second half as Stallman scored his second of the game at the 9:57, before goalie Henry Coote ripped a long shot into the cage at the 9:35 mark. Sharrio added Trinity's third goal in less than a minute with 9:01 on the clock to give the Bantams a 7-4 lead.
- The Purple & White rallied when Albanese scored his first of the game on a feed from Moroney at the 6:22 mark that started a 4-0 run by the hosts to close out the half.
- Moroney added a man-up goal with an assist from Kane Haffey '16, before Haffey and Park both found Albanese who scored twice more to give Amherst an 8-7 edge at intermission.
SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS
- The Purple & White extended the run to five unanswered goals 52 seconds into the third quarter to give Amherst a 9-7 lead.
- Knaus pulled a goal back at the 12:07 mark, but the Purple & White responded with a 9-0 run in a span of 11:13 to help Amherst coast to an 18-8 lead after 45 minutes of play.
- Park, and Albanese scored twice during the run, while Brogan Mahon '19, Andrew Ford, Moroney, Haffey, and Kadish each logged a goal.
- Connor Sheehan '18 and Michael Litner '16 added two helpers each during the stretch.
- Ryan DeSimone scored an unassisted goal for the Bantams to start the fourth quarter at the 13:34 mark, but Park was the recipient of a beautiful wing-to-wing pass from Charlie Gill '16, and he fired it into the cage to start another run of three straight for Amherst to make it 21-9 with 7:28 on the clock.
- Ford added another score, while Albanese took a Mahon pass and scored a man-down marker.
- John Caraviello found the back of the net for Trinity assisted by DeSimone at the 7:05 mark, before Zach Schwartz '18 scored with the aid of Max Keeley '18 to make it 22-10 with 4:48 to play.
- DeSimone fired in the final goal of the contest at the 3:55 mark after a feed from Sharrio to set the final score at 22-11.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Thomas Gilligan '16 earned his second straight win between the posts, making 16 saves in 49:31, while Cody Tranbarger '17 and Justin Imperatore '19 split the remaining time in goal.
- Rob Butko '16 and Austin Park '19 led Amherst with five ground balls each, while Ford, Wolf and Daniel Annino '16 picked up four each. Butko also led the defensive charge causing three opponent turnovers in the winning effort.
- Coote suffered the loss for Trinity making 16 stops in the process in 55:27 of action. Greg Barletta made four saves in reserve for the Bantams.
- Scott Morgan led all players with 10 ground balls while Sharrio, Coote, Alexander Notman, and Reid McCool picked up four apiece.
- Morgan was also stellar at the face off dot going 23-for-37.
