Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – The seventh-seeded Williams College men's lacrosse team used a four-goal third quarter to help the Ephs edge second-seeded Amherst College, 11-10 in Saturday afternoon's NESCAC Championship Quarterfinal tilt at Gooding Field.
With the loss, Amherst moves to 12-4 on the season and will await a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. Williams (10-6) advances to the semifinals of the conference tournament May 7 hosted by Tufts University.
FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS
- Williams registered the first tally of the game at the 13:15 mark when Thomas Fowler scored on a feed from Michael Fahey to make it 1-0.
- Amherst answered with three straight goals as Quinn Moroney '16, Brogan Mahon '19, and Chris Albanese '17 all found the back of the net in a span of just under five minutes to give the Purple & White a 3-1 lead. Evan Wolf '19 provided the assist on Mahon's goal.
- Peter Crane pulled the Ephs to within one when he scored an unassisted marker at the 4:52 mark to round out the scoring in the first quarter.
- In a back-and-forth second frame, Dylan Park '16 and Fahey each scored twice as the Purple & White held a 5-4 edge with 1:36 to play in the half.
- Just before intermission, Michael Litner '16 ripped a shot into the back of the net following a flip from Charlie Gill '16 to give Amherst a 6-4 lead at the break.
SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS
- A quick score by Fahey just 18 seconds into the third stanza following a pass from Fowler narrowed Williams' deficit to one, before Andrew Ford '19 extended the host's lead back to two (7-5) with an unassisted goal at the 11:10 mark.
- The Ephs then fired in three straight goals including one each from Fowler (from Fahey), Crane and Connor Roddy, to give Williams an 8-7 lead after 45 minutes of play.
- The visitors picked up where they left off with two goals to start the fourth quarter, as Fowler and Crane each found the net to give the Ephs a 10-7 lead with 11:22 on the clock.
- Amherst surged back with three straight scores, as Wolf (assisted by Moroney), Moroney, and Albanese found the back of the cage to even the game at 10-10 with 4:02 remaining in regulation. Albanese's score came on the man-advantage and was aided by Kane Haffey '16.
- With 2:06 on the clock, Tanner MacIvor put Williams ahead, 11-10 when he scored an unassisted tally.
- The Purple & White had several opportunities to find the equalizer, but four attempts fell just wide, while another was blocked.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Amherst goalie Thomas Gilligan '16 suffered the loss and made 17 saves in the contest.
- Haffey led Amherst with five ground balls, while Ryan Cassidy '16 picked up four.
- Moroney led the Purple & White with eight shots on goal.
- Williams was led by Brian Bissell's 17-for-25 effort in face offs, while he also picked up a game-high 12 ground balls.
- Crane added five ground ball pickups, while goalie Miles McCarthy added four.
- McCarthy sealed the win between the pipes, making 20 saves in the process.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- This is Amherst's first setback to Williams since the 2009 season. The Purple & White had been riding a seven-game winning streak against the Ephs.
