No. 25 Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Mass. - The No. 25 Amherst College baseball team split its doubleheader with Little Three rival Wesleyan Saturday afternoon, falling 4-3 in 8 innings before notching a 8-1 win.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS: Amherst 3, Wesleyan 4 (8 inn.)

  • The Purple & White jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Amherst opened the game with three consecutive singles to position Conner Gunn '16 to send a bases-clearing doubled down the left field line and register three RBI's.
  • After holding Wesleyan scoreless for three innings of action, the Cardinals finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth, capitalizing on an error with two outs to tally three runs and even the game at 3-3. 
  • Wesleyan would break the stalemate in extras, as Will O'Sullivan sent a walk-off single into right field in the bottom of the eighth to lift the Cardinals to the 4-3 victory.
  • Amherst outhit the Cardinals, 10-4 in the matchup.
  • Ariel Kenney '18 finished 3-for-4 in the batters box for Amherst, while Harry Roberson '18 went 2-for-4 with a run. Gunn was the final multi-hit getter for the Purple & White, going 2-for-4 with two RBI's. 
  • O'Sullivan paced the Cardinal offense, recording two of their four hits to finish 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI's. 
  • The Purple & White stranded nine, while the Cardinals left four runners on base in the outing. 
  • Tabbed with the start, Riley Streit '16 allowed three runs on two hits and struck out one in 4.1 innings. Mike Castiglie '17 pitched 2.2 innings in relief, going hitless and fanning one, while Andrew Ferrero '19 (1-2) took the loss for Amherst, allowing two hits and a run on 0.2 innings of work.
  • Peter Rantz (5-3) earned the win for Wesleyan, allowing three runs on 10 hits and striking out four in a complete eight inning game. 

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS: Amherst 8, Wesleyan 1 (7 inn.)

  • After three scoreless innings Amherst was first to strike with Anthony Spina '18 recording a single to score Dave Cunningham '16 and Max Steinhorn laying down a sacrifice bunt to plate Gunn. 
  • Wesleyan would score a run in the bottom of the third to cut Amherst's lead to one, however the Purple & White would respond in a big way, tallying five runs in the top of the fifth before adding a final insurance tally in the sixth. 
  • The Purple & White edged the Cardinals in hits, 9-3.
  • Four Amherst batters notched two hits apiece. Spina lead the offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBI's, while Roberson finished 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI. 
  • Marco Baratta and Will O'Sullivan each finished 1-for-2, while Matt Jete went 1-for-1 in the outing. 
  • Amherst left six runners on base while Wesleyan stranded three. 
  • First-year Wilson Taylor threw 3.1 innings in the start for Amherst, allowing two hits and a run while striking out three. Drew Fischer '18 (2-0) earned the win for the Purple & White, giving up one hit in 2.2 inning of relief, before Keenan Szulik '16 closed out the game in the ninth. 
  • Ethan Rode (4-2) took the loss for Wesleyan, allowing five hits and four runs in four inning of work. Four other Cardinals would take the mound in the matchup, combining for four hits and four runs.

  • Wesleyan faces off against MIT on May 3 at 4 p.m.
  • Amherst returns to action on Tuesday, May 3 when they travel to Framingham State for a 7 p.m. matchup.
