No. 17/14 Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Williams

AMHERST, Mass. – Taking the field on Military Appreciation Day, the No. 17/14 Amherst College baseball team split its twinbill with archrival Williams College, downing the Ephs 5-2 in game one, before falling 5-4 in game two Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS: Amherst 5, Williams 2

  • The Ephs were first on the scoreboard, scoring their only two runs of the outing in the top of the first inning.
  • Amherst responded immediately, registering two runs in both the first and second inning and added an insurance run in the sixth to claim the 5-2 victory.
  • Amherst edged the Ephs in hits, 8-4.
  • Sam Ellinwood '18 paced the Purple & White offense, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a run. Ariel Kenney '18 and Joe Feldman '18 each went 1-for-3, with Kenney tallying two RBI's and a run and Feldman tacking on two RBI's.
  • Adam Regensburg recorded two of the Ephs four hits, going 2-for-4 with a run. Doug Schaffer finished 1-for-3, while Jack Cloud went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
  • Tyler Duff (0-2) took the loss for Williams, pitching six innings and giving up eight hits and five runs while striking out two.
  • Senior captain Riley Streit (2-1) tossed a complete game for the Purple & White, allowing four hits and two runs while fanning three in seven innings on the mound.
  • Both sides stranded six runners on base in the outing.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS: Amherst 4, Williams 5

  • After recording runs in the second and seventh inning, the Williams plated twice in the top of the ninth to walk away with the 5-4 win.
  • Max Steinhorn '18 sent a sacrifice fly into center field to score Ellinwood and make it a 5-4 contest in the bottom of the ninth, however with runners on second and third with two outs, Amherst was unable to notch a game-tying hit as they fell to Williams in game two.
  • The Purple & White outhit the Ephs, 10-9.
  • Harry Roberson '18 finished 3-for-5 with a run and a RBI, while Ellinwood and Ryan Hardin '18 each went 2-for-3 with Ellinwood plating once and Hardin tallying a run and a RBI.
  • Jackson Parese finished 4-for-5 in the batter's box for Williams and notched a run, while Doug Schaffer and Jack Could each went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
  • Nathan Michalski pitched 5.1 innings in the start for Williams, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out two. Jack Bohen tossed 2.1 innings in relief, while Arnie Capute (1-0) earned the win, throwing 1.1 innings and allowing two hits and a run.
  • Tabbed with the start, Keenan Szulik '16 tossed six innings, allowing three hits and two runs while fanning four. George Long '17 took the mound for an inning in relief, allowing one hit and a run while striking out one batter, while Sam Schneider '18, Chris Baldi '17 (1-1), and Andrew Ferrero '19 pitched 0.2 innings apiece, allowing a combined five hits.
  • Williams left 12 runners on base in the outing, while Amherst stranded eight.
