Baseball Falls to Tufts, 5-4 in Game One of NESCAC Championship

Nashua, N.H. - The second-seeded Amherst College baseball team fell to East No. 1 seed Tufts, 5-4 in Friday's NESCAC Championship Game One matchup at Holman Stadium on the campus of Bates College.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • After falling behind 1-0 early in the matchup Amherst would even the score in the top of the second as Max Steinhorn '18 ripped a single to center field with two outs to plate Dave Cunningham '16.
  • Tufts would score another run in the third, however the Purple & White would take a 3-2 in the fourth with Conner Gunn sending a shot over the right field wall to collect two RBI's.
  • Amherst extended their lead to 4-2 an inning later, with junior Yanni Thanopoulos singling to left center in another two out situation to score Steinhorn.
  • The tally proved to be the final run of the game for Amherst as the Jumbos kept the Purple & White scoreless in the final four innings while scoring three runs of their own to claim the 5-4 win. 
  • The Jumbos outhit Amherst, 9-6.
  • Steinhorn was the sole multi-hit getter for the Purple & White, going a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and run. Gun finished the outing 1-for-4 with two RBI's and a run. 
  • Matt Moser led the Tufts' offense, homering to go 2-for-4 with three RBI's and a run. 
  • Tabbed with the start, Jackson Volle '17 tossed four innings for the Purple & White, allowing two runs on four hits while fanning two before George Long '17 entered for an inning of relief work, allowing three hits and two run. Mike Castiglie '17 took the loss for Amherst allowing a run on two hits in the sixth, while Andrew Ferrero '19 closed out the game with two innings of run-less work on the mound.
  • Ian Kinney earned the win for Tufts, allowing two hits and no runs in three innings, while Andrew David earned the save.

  • Amherst will take on the loser of the Game Two matchup between Wesleyan and Trinity tomorrow, May 14 at 10 a.m. in the double-elimination NESCAC tournament.
