Baseball Drops Game Three of NESCAC Championship to Tufts, 13-6

Nashua, N.H. - The Amherst College baseball team held a 6-3 lead heading into the final inning, however they were unable to overcome a 10-run rally by the Bantams in the ninth and fell to Trinity, 13-6 at Holman Stadium.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • After trading runs in the third, Trinity took a one-run lead in the top of the fourth before Amherst exploded for a four running inning in the bottom half. 
  • Max Steinhorn '18 evened the score at 2-2 with a single up the middle to plate Harry Roberson '18 before Ariel Kenney '18 blasted a three-run homer to give the Purple & White a 5-2 lead. 
  • Following two scoreless innings Matt Toth recorded an RBI to cut Trinity's deficit to two, however the Purple & White responded in the eighth as Kenny doubled to left center to score Conner Gunn '16 and make it a 6-3 game.
  • The Bantams would close out the elimination game in the ninth, using a seven hit, 10 run inning to claim the 13-6 win.
  • Trinity edged Amherst in hits, 14-11.
  • Kenny finished a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs and four RBI's for the Purple & White, while Gunn acted as the other Amherst multi-hit getter, going 2-for-4 with two runs. 
  • Matt Toth led the Bantam offense, going 2-for-2 with four RBI's and two runs, while Ben Reinisch finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs.
  • Riley Streit '16 tossed 6.2 innings in the start for Amherst, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out one. Mike Castiglie '17 pitched a two-hit run-less inning for the Purple & White in relief, while Andrew Ferrero '19 (1-3) took the loss, giving up four runs on three hits on 0.1 innings on the mound. 
  • Tabbed with the start, Anthony Eglen Jr. allowed five runs and six hits in four innings, while Chris Speer and Richie Cardillo combined for 3.2 innings in relief, giving up four hits and a run. Sam Jordan (4-3) earned the win for Trinity, giving up one hit and no runs in the final 1.1 innings.

  • With the loss Amherst is eliminated from the 2016 NESCAC Baseball Championships and now awaits a potential at-large bid to the NCAA's.
