Baseball Falls to Stevens, 8-5 in Regular Season Finale

HOBOKEN, N.J. - The Amherst College baseball team racked up seven hits in the non-conference outing, however the Purple & White would fall to Stevens Institute of Technology, 8-5 in their regular season finale at Dobbelaar Field.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Amherst came out strong, with senior Dave Cunningham homering in the cleanup spot in the top of the first to give the Purple & White a quick 3-0 lead. 
  • Stevens would cut the deficit to two in the bottom half, as Nolan Bennett singled up the middle to plate Jayson Yano. 
  • Yanni Thanopoulos '17 would make it a 4-1 game an inning later, reaching on a fielder's choice to score Sam Ellinwood '18.
  • The Ducks would hold Amherst scoreless during their next six at bats while tallying a run in the fifth and sixth, two in the seventh and three in the eighth to claim an 8-4 lead.
  • Amherst would try to rally in the game's final inning with Harry Roberson '18 ripping a single to right field to score a run and cut the Duck's lead to three, however Stevens would outlast the Purple & White's final push. 
  • Steinhorn was the lone multi-hit getter for the Purple & White, going 2-for-4, while Cunningham went 1-for-4 with a homer to knock in three runs for Amherst. 
  • Bennett paced the Ducks offense, going 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI's, while Michael Mile finished 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI's. 
  • Tabbed with the start Drew Fischer '17 tossed 3.1 innings, striking out four and allowing five hits and a run before Mike Castiglie '17 went hitless in 0.2 innings in relief. First-year Wilson Taylor (2-1) took the loss for the Purple & White, giving up four runs on four hits while fanning three in 2.1 innings on the mound. Andrew Ferrero '19, Sam Schneider '18 and Chris Baldi '17 closed out the game for Amherst, combining for four hits and three runs. 
  • Greg Jakusik (3-0) was credited with the win for Stevens, allowing three hits and a run while striking out seven in six innings on the mound, while Jayson Yano earned the save, giving up two hits and a run while fanning one after entering for the game's final two innings. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Ducks edged Amherst in hits, 8-7.
  • The Purple & White pitching staff combined for seven walks and seven strikeouts, while Stevens fanned nine and walked five. 
  • Amherst left seven runners on base in the matchup, while the Ducks stranded 14.
