No. 12 Amherst Loses in Overtime to No. 3 Tufts in National Championship Rematch

MEDFORD, Mass- In a rematch of the 2019 National Championship, the No. 15 Amherst College men's soccer team was edged by No. 3 Tufts University in a double OT thriller, 2-1. The Mammoths drop to 9-2-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the NESCAC, while the Jumbos improve to 10-0-2 overall and 6-0-2 in the NESCAC.
 
The Mammoths return to Gooding Field this Wednesday October 20 for a mid-week tilt against visiting WPI.
 
Highlights:
 
  • Amherst dominated offensively in the early going and scored in the 27th minute off the foot of Kyle Kelly '22. The goal went unassisted, but was generated off a corner kick from Ignacio Cubeddu'23.
  • Amherst had other chances to score in the first half as the Mammoths outshot Tufts 4-1 and took their 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
  • Shifting the momentum at the beginning of the second half, Tufts leveled the score in the 59th minute on a goal from Travis Van Brewer, assisted by Woovin Shin.
  • Amherst produced their best look of the second half in the 82nd minute, but two shots by Cubeddu were just off the mark.
  • Kofi Hope-Gund'22 made an incredible kick save in the waning moments of regulation to send the game to overtime.
  • After a quiet first overtime period, Amherst built another attack and Ada Okorogheye's promising shot in the beginning of the second overtime frame was saved by Tufts' Goalie Erik Lauta.
  • Tufts was able to capitalize on a free kick just outside the box by Van Brewer at the end of the 108th minute with a game winning goal by Calvin Aroh.
Amherst outshot Tufts 10-9, but both teams put four shots on frame across the 108 minutes of action. Hope-Gund finished with two saves and Lauta stopped three shots, including two in the decisive second overtime period.
