Mammoths Score Trinity of Goals to Beat the Bantams, 3-0

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men's soccer team welcomed Trinity College to Gooding Field on Tuesday evening, as they entered their last fixture of the 2021 regular season.  Under the floodlights, Amherst won 3-0 in a comfortable victory, with goals from Laurens ten Cate '25, German Giammattei '22, and Joe Raymond '24. The Mammoths now head into the post-season with a 12-2-1 record for the season and 7-2-1 standing in the NESCAC. By virtue of that conference record, the Mammoths finished second in the NESCAC regular season standings and grabbed the #2 seed in the NESCAC Tournament beginning this Saturday, October 30.

On Tuesday night, the Mammoths were on the front foot from the start, and they came close to making the score 1-0 on numerous occasions. Shots by Fynn Hayton-Ruffner '25 and Alex Shahmirzadi '23 both hit the post, while an edge of the box effort from Ignacio Cubeddu '23 struck the crossbar. Trinity's only shot of the game was a long-range effort which forced goalkeeper Kofi Hope-Gund '22 to make a difficult, outstretched save.

It wasn't until the 60th minute when the home side opened the scoring. Laurens ten Cate '25 converted a perfectly placed German Giammattei '22 cross by delicately heading the ball low to the Trinity goalkeeper's left side. This is ten Cate's second goal in as many games, after scoring his first ever collegiate goal to open the scoring against Colby on Saturday. Eight minutes later, Giammattei was involved again, converting a wonderful long-distance cross from Ignacio Cubeddu '23 with a header into the top left corner. Not long after doubling the lead, the home side completed a dominant display with a wonderful passing goal. A string of passes led to Jack O'Brien '22 sliding a low cross to Joe Raymond '24, who calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net.

Off the back of a three-match winning streak and an 8-0-0 home record, the Amherst men's soccer team now look forward to their NESCAC Championship quarterfinals matchup with Colby College. This past weekend, the Mammoths defeated Colby at home by a score of 2-0. Colby will return to the Pioneer Valley for the quarterfinal matchup that is currently set for 12PM on October 30 at Hitchcock Field.
