Mammoths Earn 3-0 Shutout at Babson, Will Host Sectionals at Hitchcock Field

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Senior goalkeeper Kofi Hope-Gund stopped all five shots he faced to backstop the Amherst College men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Babson College in the NCAA Division III Tournament round of 32 on Sunday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

"We were fortunate today to make a couple plays," said Mammoths head coach Justin Serpone, who is seeking his second national championship after leading Amherst to the 2015 NCAA title. "It could have gone either way. I think that up until about 35 seconds left in the game we were worried and knew how they could get right back into it so credit to Babson, thanks to Babson for a great weekend and we're just happy to move on."

The Mammoths (14-2-2) posted their sixth straight shutout to advance to the round of 16 for the 11th consecutive season and ended the season of the NEWMAC champion Beavers (12-5-3). Amherst will now return home to host the next two rounds of the tournament at Hitchcock Field, where they will face SUNYAC champion SUNY Cortland on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m. NESCAC rival Middlebury and OAC champion John Carroll are also headed to Amherst for a round of 16 tilt with the winners of Saturday's games meeting on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Mammoths scored just 97 seconds after the opening whistle when senior striker German Giammattei sent a shot on goal that was saved by Babson netminder Itai Rubin, but senior Sebastian Derby was there for the rebound to blast in his second goal of the season, both of which have been game-winners.
    • "German had a great shot, the goalie made a great save on that. I was just lucky to be there and put it in," said Derby. "That gave us the momentum we needed to start the game on the right foot."
  • Amherst added another goal late in the first half when All-NESCAC forward Ada Okorogheye intercepted a failed Babson clear and found space to score his third goal of the season, all three of which have come in the last four games. Okorogheye scored the overtime golden goal the last time these teams faced off during the 2019 regular season.
  • Derby got on the scoresheet again with an assist in the 58th minute as he sent a header on goal that was stopped by a spectacular leaping save from Rubin, but freshman Laurens ten Cate touched in the rebound for the third goal of his rookie campaign.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Hope-Gund earned his sixth shutout of the season, playing all 90 minutes after splitting the game in goal yesterday. Five saves marked a season high for the New York native. As a team, it was the 13th shutout of the season for the Mammoths.
  • Amherst held a 19-8 advantage in shots and sent 7 shots on Rubin, the NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Year.
