AMHERST, Mass. -- Nick Bondra scored two goals and Pieter von Steinbergs had a four-point game as the Amherst College men's ice hockey team skated to a 5-1 win over Division II St. Michael's College on Tuesday in the home opener at Orr Rink.
The Mammoths (1-1) earned their 12th straight win against the Purple Knights (1-2), a streak that dates back to 2008. Amherst returns to action on Friday (Nov. 26) when the Mammoths travel to take on Utica in the semifinals of the Utica College Thanksgiving Tournament.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Mammoths struck first on the power play midway through the first period when Matteo Mangiardi fired a shot that Sean Wrenn tipped in for his first goal of the season.
- Bondra scored the next two goals for the Mammoths. His strike at 15:16 in the first period ended up as the game-winner and the senior winger scored his first career shorthanded goal 5:42 into the second.
- After assisting on the first three goals, von Steinbergs netted a goal of his own on another power-play opportunity in the second period for the first four-point game of his career.
- The Purple Knights got on the board in the second period as Sel Narby capitalized on a power-play opportunity for his first goal of the season.
- The Mammoths put the game away with an empty-net goal in the closing minutes as Greg McGunigle set up first-year Bobby Luca for his first collegiate goal.
