Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Amherst Topples #10 Trinity, 3-2

HARTFORD, Conn. -- First-year Matt Toporowski tallied the first two points of his collegiate career with a goal and an assist as the Amherst College men's ice hockey team earned a 3-2 win over 10th-ranked Trinity College in NESCAC action on Friday night at the Koeppel Community Sports Center. Special teams were the story as four of the game's five goals came on power plays.

The Mammoths (2-3, 1-1 NESCAC) are back in action with another NESCAC game against Little Three rival Wesleyan on Saturday (Dec. 4) at 3 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Toporowski opened the scoring with his first collegiate goal in a 4-on-3 situation at 11:16 in the first period, firing in a one-timer off the pass from Pieter von Steinbergs.
  • The Bantams quickly answered as Jax Murray netted a power-play goal just over a minute later to tie the score.
  • Matteo Mangiardi gave the Mammoths the lead midway through the second period with an unassisted even-strength goal, the second goal of the season for the senior forward.
  • The Mammoths made it 3-1 on another power-play opportunity later in the second when junior defenseman Joey Verkerke scored his first goal of the season, which held up as the eventual game-winner.
  • Murray scored again for the Bantams in the final minute of the second period before a scoreless third period concluded with the Mammoths successfully killing a late power play and withstanding Trinity's extra-skater push for the final 1:04 of the game.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Sophomore Alex Wisco made a career-best 25 saves in his third collegiate game to earn the win in goal for the Mammoths.
  • Verkerke scored his third career goal, two of which have been game-winners.
  • The Bantams outshot the Mammoths, 27-24.
  • Each team scored two power-play goals as the Mammoths were 2-for-7 the on the power play and the Bantams were 2-for-6.
