BRUNSWICK, Maine – Converting on two of four corner opportunities in the matchup, junior
Beth Williamson ripped two low drives past the Polar Bear keeper as the Amherst College field hockey team battled to its first win over seventh-ranked Bowdoin College since 2017, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Ryan Field.
With the victory, Amherst improves to 2-0 on the season and to 1-0 in conference play, while Bowdoin drops its first contest of the year and falls to 1-1 overall (0-1 NESCAC). The Mammoths return to the field next Tuesday, Sept. 14 when they travel to Keene State for a 6:30pm non-conference matchup.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Grabbing a 1-0 lead 2:25 into the bout, Amherst capitalized on its first penalty corner of the contest to take an early edge. Collecting the insertion pass from sophomore Muffie Mazambani, Williamson blasted a low shot into the left corner.
- Responding with 4:46 remaining in the first quarter, a fast break led to a Polar Bear score as Faith Jennings redirected a cross to the far post from Abby Bashaw over the goal line to even things at one all.
- Deadlocked at 1-1 entering the third frame, Williamson potted her fourth goal of the fall and what stood as the game winner at the 33:14 mark as she snuck a hard shot inside the left post with an assist from Mazambani following the Mammoths' second corner of the day.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Junior Kaitlin Broda (2-0) earned the win in frame for the Mammoths, making five stops, while Maddie Ferrucci (1-1) registered four stops for Bowdoin in the losing effort.
- Amherst held the edge in shots on target, 7-6, while the Polar Bears owned a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.
