PURCHASE, N.Y. – A score in the opening minutes was enough to lift the visitors to victory, as the Amherst College men's soccer team blanked Manhattanville College, 1-0, under the lights Wednesday evening at GoValiants.com Field.
With the win, Amherst improves to 2-1-0 on the season, while Manhattanville drops to 0-3-1 overall. The Mammoths return to Hitchcock Field this Saturday, September 18 when they host Hamilton in their home opener. Opening whistle is slated for 2:30pm.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Potting what stood as the contest's lone score and the game-winner just 6:23 into the first half, senior Bryce Johnson registered his first goal of the fall with an assist from Niall Murphy '25. Capitalizing on a scrum in front of the net following a free kick, Johnson sent a low, left-footed strike from point-blank range inside the right post.
- Looking to add an insurance tally in the 25th minute, German Giammattei '22 and Johnson tested the Manhattanville keeper with back-to-back shots, but both attempts were met with kick saves to keep the Valiants within striking distance.
- In a stellar defensive effort, the Mammoths didn't allow a single shot on target by the home team and closed out the game owning the advantage in shots (24-6), shots on goal (13-0), and corner kicks (8-1).
- Junior Bernie White (2-1-0) earned the win in frame for the Mammoths, while Matthew Rodriguez (0-3-1) made 12 stops for the Valiants in losing effort.
