AMHERST, Mass. – First-year
Abbey Kays had a hand in all three Mammoths scores, notching a goal and two helpers, as the No. 15 Amherst College field hockey team downed Hamilton College, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at the at the Gladchuck Field Hockey Complex.
With the victory, Amherst improves to 4-0 on the season and to 2-0 in conference play, while Hamilton suffers its first loss and drops to 3-1 overall (1-1 NESCAC). The Mammoths returns to action this Wednesday, September 22 when they host MIT in a 7:00PM bout.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Sparking a Mammoths goal 3:54 into the matchup, Kat Mason '25 stole the ball from a Continentals defender on the right sideline before cutting across the field and dishing a pass to  Abbey Kays '25 near the top of the circle. One-touching a pass to the penalty stroke dot, Kays connected with Muffie Mazambani '24 who quickly turned and powered a low shot into the back of the net.
- Doubling Amherst's advantage with 1:34 on the clock in the opening frame, Kays posted her second straight assist as she dribbled to the right side before ripping a shot towards framed that was redirected in by junior Natalie Hobbs.
- Emma Liebegott looked to get Hamilton back within one at the 10:53 mark in the second quarter as she beat a defender to earn a free path to net, but Kaitlin Broda '23 kept the visitors scoreless as she picked up the kick save on the attempt.
- Getting on the board in the third quarter, the Continentals capitalized on a corner opportunity as Maura Holden tipped a shot by Hannah Dillon past the Mammoths' keeper with 9:42 on the clock.
- Responding 1:28 later, Amherst retook a two-goal lead. Adding a score to an already impressive outing, Kays notched the Mammoths' insurance dagger and the final goal of the contest as she sprinted around the top of the circle and drove a hard, low shot through traffic and into the bottom left corner.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Amherst bested the visitors in shots (17-4), shots on goal (13-3) and penalty corners (5-3).
- Earning the win in goal for the Mammoths, Broda (4-0) registered two stops in the game, while Maggie Reville (3-1) made 10 saves in the losing effort for Hamilton.
