NEW LONDON, Conn. – Finding the back of the net in all four quarters, the Mammoths tallied five goals in the second half to break away down the stretch as the ninth-ranked Amherst College field hockey team topped Connecticut College, 7-2, Saturday at Silfen Field.
With the win, the Mammoths improve to 6-0 on the season and to 3-0 in conference play, while Connecticut College drops to 1-4 overall (0-3 NESCAC). Amherst returns to action this Tuesday, September 28 when they welcome Clark University to Hill Field for the program's first-ever matchup on their newly renovated, water-based surface.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Getting on the board in the eighth minute, first-year Kat Mason corralled a loose ball on a failed clear, split her defenders, and beat the Camels' netminder in an unassisted effort.
- Responding five minutes later, Hannah Webster redirected a shot from Bridget Mason on the right side over the goal line to deadlock the sides at 1-1 after the first period.
- Taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, Amherst capitalized on a corner opportunity as Beth Williamson '23 powered a dish from Mason into the back of the net with 2:24 remaining before intermission.
- Adding to the Mammoths' advantage one minute into the third frame, Natalie Hobbs '23 potted her third goal of the fall with an assist from Muffie Mazambani '24 to set the score at 3-1.
- A penalty stroke conversion by Kylee Quinn 1:16 later got the home team back into striking distance with 27:48 remaining in regulation, but that is as close as the Camels' got to evening the score as Amherst rattled off four unanswered goals to earn the 7-2 victory.
- Logging her sixth goal of the season at the 36:35 mark, Mazambani made it a 4-2 game, before Hobbs, Sam Maynard '25, and Williamson each added a score in the fourth and final quarter.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Kaitlin Broda '23 (6-0) earned the win in goal for Amherst, playing 48:58, while Sara Nidus '24 saw the field in the final 11:02 in relief. Jackie Mountford (1-4) took the loss for the Camels, making nine saves on the day.
- Dominating play up front, the Mammoths owned the advantage in shots (28-7), shots on goal (17-2), and penalty corners (14-1).
