Giammattei Nets Game-Winner as No. 20 Amherst Defeats Stevens, 1-0

AMHERST, Mass. – A score by senior German Giammattei in the 71st minute stood as the difference maker in the battle, as the No. 20 Amherst College men's soccer team downed the Stevens Institute of Technology, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon at Hitchcock Field.

"Stevens is a great program who has ended our seasons twice in my career (2008 and 2011). Today's win was something that probably means a bit more to our alumni than most non- conference games," said head coach Justin Serpone. "Coach Jordan does an awesome job with that team and they will, no doubt, be in the NCAA conversation in a few weeks. They made our lives difficult all day and, if a few plays had turned out differently, it would have been the opposite result."

With the win, Amherst improves to 6-1-0 on the season, while Stevens falls to 5-3-1 overall. Amherst returns to Hitchcock Field this Saturday, October 2 when they host archrival Williams College in a 2:30PM conference matchup.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Following a tightly battled first half that saw the teams combine for only one shot on frame, Niall Murphy '25 looked to break the scoreless deadlock 15 minutes after intermission, but his header off a cross from Ada Okorogheye '24 was met with a team save by a Stevens defender.
  • Capitalizing on a free kick from 35 yards out near the left sideline, senior Gabe Gitler's dish towards frame connected with Giammattei in the box who headed a shot off the far left post and over the goal line with 14:00 minutes remaining in regulation.
  • Making a push to net the equalizer late, Sean Ryan and Matthew Pinho each tested Mammoths' netminder Bernie White '23 in the final five minutes, but White turned away both shots to seal the 1-0 victory for the home team.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Registering three saves, White (6-1-0) was credited with the win for Amherst, while Aedan Boriotti (3-2-1) totaled two stops in the losing effort for the Ducks.
  • Amherst owned the advantage in shots, 14-6, and shots on target, 5-3, while both sides drew three corner kicks in the matchup.
"When we lost to Bowdoin at the beginning of September, we got together and decided it was imperative to be 6-1-0 at the end of September (heading into the Williams- Middlebury weekend) and that's where we are now," Serpone continued. "We'll take a deep breath and then get excited for Saturday. Nothing quite like Amherst - Williams on Hitchcock. They beat us last time they were here and no one has forgotten that. It should be a good one."
