NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Ranked No. 2 in the country in the United Soccer Coaches National top-25 preseason poll, the Amherst College men's soccer team did not disappoint in its long-awaited return to competition as the Mammoths fought back from a 1-0 deficit and recorded a goal in each half to open the 2021 season with a 2-1 victory over Norwich University Tuesday evening under the lights at Sabine Field.
With the win, Amherst opens the year at 1-0, while Norwich suffers its first loss of the fall and drops to 1-1 overall. The Mammoths return to action this Saturday, Sept. 11 when they travel to Bowdoin College for a 2:30pm kickoff.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Cadets tallied their sixth goal of the fall and broke the scoreless deadlock with 16:46 remaining in the first half following a foul in the box. Lining up for the free kick 15 yards from the net, Amerle Nemeye drilled a shot off the shoulder of an Amherst defender and into the left corner of the goal.
- Registering Amherst's first score of the season, 2019 National Player of the Year German Giammattei '23 evened the game at 1-1 just before intermission. Alex Shahmirzadi '23 set up marker as he lofted a pass behind the Norwich defense towards Giammattei who chested down the pass and turned towards frame. Sprinting out to meet Giammattei five yards off the end line, the Cadets' keeper got a piece of the junior's initial shot before the Pinecrest, Fla. native volleyed his own rebound into the netting to get the Mammoths on the board.
- Giving the Mammoths a 2-1 edge in the 75th minute, first-year Ben Clark-Eden's first collegiate goal proved to be a game-winner. Capitalizing on a throw in from Bryce Johnson '22 from the left sideline, Clark-Eden headed a redirect from Wyatt McCarthy '24 past the outstretched netminder and into the bottom right corner.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Amherst held momentum for the majority of the matchup, outshooting the Cadets 24-4, including a 11-1 advantage in shots on target, and earning eight corner kick opportunities to Norwich's two.
- Bernie White '23 (1-0) claimed the win in goal for the Mammoths, making one save on the night, while Robert Wagenseller (1-1) racked up nine stops in the losing effort for Norwich.
- Ignacio Cubeddu '24 led all players with four shots on frame in the contest, while Giammattei's nine shot attempts were a game-high.
