Mammoths' rally falls short versus Trinity in 3-1 loss

AMHERST, Mass. -- Cole Poliziani scored two second-period goals Friday night to lead the Trinity College men's hockey team past Amherst College, 3-1, at Orr Rink.

The Mammoths, whose goal was scored by Connor Merrill, fell to 6-8-2 overall and 5-5-1 in conference play. Trinity improved to 9-6-0 overall and 7-4 in NESCAC play. Amherst is back home Sunday for a 3 p.m. match-up with Wesleyan. That game was originally scheduled for tomorrow but has been postponed until Sunday due to weather.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

* The game was scoreless after the first 20 minutes thanks in part to Mammoths' goaltender Dan Dachille, who stopped all 15 shots he faced in the first period, including a point-blank shot from the slot by Bantam Riley Prattson.,

* Prattson got a measure of revenge in the second, assisting on both of Poliziani's goals to give Trinity a 2-0 lead after two periods. Amherst outshot the visitors 11-5 in the second stanza and had a few good scoring opportunities. Michael Pitts from just above the left face-off circle and Joey Verkerke from the right point each had great looks and shots, but both were foiled by the quick glove of Bantam goalie Patrick Pugliese.

* Poliziani had a chance for the hat trick and a 3-0 Trinity lead late in the second period, but Mammoth defenseman Connor McGinnis made a great play to nearly catch Poliziani and slap the puck away with his stick while still a stride behind the Bantam forward.

* With 13:50 left in the game, Matt Toporowski won a face-off to the left of the Bantam goal, pushing the puck toward the goal, collecting it and quickly sliding a pass to the slot. Merrill, positioned just outside of the circle for the draw, had a wide open net to slide the puck into and cut the Bantam lead to 2-1.

BY THE NUMBERS

* Trinity finished with a 30-26 edge in shots for the night. Dachille made 27 saves for the Mammoths. Amherst won 34 of 67 face-offs, with Mitchell Shults having the best night, winning 11 of 18 draws taken.
