AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior
Matteo Mangiardi scored an extra-man goal with 1:35 left in the third period Sunday, lifting the Amherst College men's hockey team to a 2-2 tie with Bowdoin at Orr Rink.
Amherst's record improved to 2-6-1 with the tie, 1-4-1 in conference play. The Mammoths are at Middlebury Tuesday for 3 p.m. first face-off. Bowdoin (2-4-2, 1-2-1) is at Connecticut College tomorrow for a 3 p.m. contest.

Pieter von Steinbergs stopped the puck along the right boards near the blue line and slid a pass into the corner for
Matt Toporowski. Toporowski fired a quick cross ice pass to Mangiardi stationed just inside the left circle mid-slot and he one-time a beautiful shot into the open left side of the goal for the tying marker.
* After being shut out Saturday, the Mammoths found the back of the net early against Bowdoin, taking a 1-0 lead with a short-handed goal 8:29 into the first period. Senior
Mitchell Shults corralled the puck in the neutral zone and broke into the Polar Bears zone on a 2 on 3 with sophomore
Ryan Tucker. Shults held the puck as Tucker skated between two defenders in the slot and then threaded a pinpoint pass to Tucker in the slot. Tucker was able to redirect the puck into the goal for the lead.
* Bowdoin bounced back with two even-strength goals in the first period to take a 2-1 lead, tying the game on a Bobby Pearl goal at the 12:09 mark, then taking the lead when Chris Brown found the back of goal with 1:37 left in the frame.
BY THE NUMBERS
* The Mammoths outshot Bowdoin 43-36 in the contest and won 36 of 58 face-offs over 60 minutes. Leslie made 34 saves for the Mammoths, including 15 in the third period and overtime. In one 12-second period of the third period, Leslie stopped five consecutive Bowdoin shots to keep it a 2-1 game. Alex Kozic of Bowdoin finished with 41 saves in the game.
* Bowdoin was penalized 5 times for 10 minutes and Amherst 3 times for 6 minutes in the game. Neither team scored on the power-play.
