#4 Mammoths roll by Springfield, 8-0, for 8th straight win

AMHERST, Mass. -- First year Anna Aiello scored a natural hat trick Thursday night at Hill Field, helping the #4-ranked Amherst College field hockey team to its eighth consecutive victory, 8-0, over visiting Springfield College.

Amherst improved to 10-2 with the victory and is off until the Oct. 19th when they will travel to nearby Northampton to take on Smith College at 6:30 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths got on the board in the game's fifth minute when senior Beth Williamson converted a penalty corner opportunity, taking a pass from Kat Mason, who received the insert pass and slid it over to Williamson, who wound up and rocketed a shot past the Pride keeper.

* Junior Muffie Mazambani scored the next two goals for Amherst -- extending her scoring streak to five straight contests. The first came off another penalty corner chance and occurred when she tipped in a nice pass from Williamson, who had made a nice move at the top of the circle to maneuver around a Pride defender and create some space for her pass to Mazambani in front of the goal. Junior Gwen Allen set up the next score with some skilled dribbling into the circle, speeding past a Springfield defender, cutting toward the goal and as she approached the keeper, sliding a pass to a wide open Mazambani, who re-directed the ball into an open goal for a 3-0 lead.

* With 6:17 remaining in the second quarter, Kat Mason had some fancy dribbling, pushing the ball to the baseline, cutting along the baseline to the goal before veering out in front of it and slapping a backhand past the keeper for a 4-0 lead. The Mammoths made it 5-0 before halftime when Aiello stole a clear outside of the circle and fired the ball back into the circle and on goal, where Paige DiBiase was stationed to tip it up over the stick of the Springfield keeper.

* Aiello owned the third quarter, scoring three times, twice unassisted and once off an assist from Mason, to extend the lead to 8-0. The three goals were her first collegiate tallies.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst owned all the team stats, outshooting the Pride 24-0, including 13 shots on goal to nine for Springfield. The Mammoths had nine penalty corners to zero for Springfield.

* Camryn Marano made five save for Springfield. Sara Nidus and Kaitlin Broda combined for the shutout in goal for the Mammoths.
