Abbey Kays keys #7 Mammoths 3-0 shutout of Camels

AMHERST, Mass. -- Sophomore Abbey Kays notched one goal and assisted on two others Tuesday night as the #7-ranked Amherst College field hockey team shutout visiting NESCAC rival Connecticut College, 3-0, on Hill Field.

Amherst scored twice in the first quarter and dominated much of the play until Kays iced the win with her fourth-quarter tally. The Mammoths improved to 7-2 overall, 4-2 in the conference. Conn. College slipped to 2-7 overall, 0-5 in NESCAC play this season.

The Mammoths will host Wesleyan Saturday for a 11 a.m. game at Hill Field. Sunday the 9th, Amherst will be home again for Senior Day and will face Bowdoin at noon.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Kat Mason put the first Amherst tally on the board, receiving a pass from Kays and curling around to her right, then firing off a hard slap shot into the lower left corner of the goal with 4 minutes and 46 seconds having elapsed in the contest. It was Mason's sixth goal of the season.

* Junior Muff Mazambani made it 2-0 just about 7 1/2 minutes later when she rreceived pass from Kays in the left of the circle, split two defenders, stopped, cut back to her right for space and then unleashed a rocket into the top of the goal for her eighth goal of the season.

* The Camels hung tough thanks in large part to goalkeeper Sophie Moniz who had nine saves in the contest. Conn. had a chance to score both in the second and fourth quarters, but Sara Nidus came up with saves each time to keep them off the board.

* Finally, with 5:31 left in the game, Kays found room at the top of the circle after having a rush stopped by two defenders and fired off a low slapper into the right corner of the net for the three-goal advantage. It was her fourth goal of the season.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst held an 18-5 advantage in shots, putting 13 shots on goal to the Camels' 2. Amherst had 3 penalty corners to Conn. College's 2.
