WENHAM, Mass. --
Kori Barach posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds while
Maya Cwalina added 12 points, 8 blocks and 7 rebounds Wednesday night as the Amherst College women's basketball team rallied past host Gordon College for a 52-41 victory.
Amherst improved to 3-0 with the win and is off until November 29th when the Mammoths will host Emmanuel College at 7 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths trailed 29-25 with 5:32 to go in the third quarter but closed the stanza with a 12-0 run that left them with a 39-31 lead after three.
* First year
Anna Tranum started the run with a lay-up underneath the basket.
Reeya Patel's mid-range jumper with 4:34 remaining tied the score at 31. Barach's lay-up gave Amherst a two-point lead with 3:15 left.
Sylvia Liddle then fed Patel for an easy lay-in that made it 35-31 Mammoths. Following a quick turnover, Barach nailed a jumper for the six-point edge.
AnLing Vera then grabbed a late defensive rebound which led to a Patel jumper with five seconds on the clock and the quarter ended with a 39-31 lead for the Mammoths.
* Amherst was still up six points in the final quarter when Barach drained a three-point attempt with 7:42 left to make it a nine-point Mammoths' lead. Barach scored 7 of her team-high 15 points in the final quarter as the Mammoths' lead never dipped below 7 points following that made trey.
* The Mammoths trailed by eight, 15-7, after the first quarter, but Cwalina took over the second 10 minutes, going 4 for 4 from the floor and 2 for 2 from the line to score 10 of the Mammoths' 17 points. She also had three rebounds and two blocks in that time. Her short-range jumper with just over a minute to go allowed Amherst to in the locker room at the half up 25-24.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths shot 42.3 percent (22 of 52) from the floor in the game, and won the battle on the glass, 38-33. They had 10 blocks in the game to Gordon's zero.
* Both Patel and Tranum shot 4 for 9 from the floor and finished with 9 and 8 points, respectively. Vera and Liddle each had 4 points. Vera added a team-high 4 assists.
